Climate Change Series

This project is a typography series for my Typography course with MCAD in spring 2018. Students were meant to design pieces from the ground up, first using dummy copy, and then revise, remix, and rework, using an article with a theme of our choice. I chose the theme of climate change, specifically looking at what impact global warming might have on pathogens that have long been dormant in permafrost. The poster series laid the foundation for our final project: a 64-page electronic publication. For both of these projects, I selected two articles which focused on climate change in Greenland as a case study.

The posters evolved from early sketches using dummy copy to final pieces featuring text from The Atlantic article, “The Zombie Diseases of Climate Change,” by Robinson Meyer.

For the 64-page electronic publication, I used selections of text from The New Yorker article, “A Song of Ice,” by Elizabeth Kolbert juxtaposed with selections from academic articles on permafrost pathogens and the dangers they pose to humans. This publication is intended to be projected in a large scale within a small room, possibly using different colored lights. The texts would overlap each other and eventually be projected onto the viewer no matter where she/he stands, suggesting that eventually we each must confront the realities of climate change.
